Millar creates her work with flame, wax and wood. Encaustic wax is a medium that requires heat to first melt it into a liquid and then can be used as a painting medium. Once cooled it can be carved and sculpted – a key aspect for her techniques. Many of Millar’s pieces have been painted over, scraped away, or destroyed and recreated over years. She is inspired by the textures found in nature, movements of the ocean and the porous fibres of tree bark. Primarily, her paintings are abstract; however, she thrives when given a challenging commission posed by her collectors.
Millar has recently moved to Ucluelet, B.C. And shares her time between Pemberton, Kelowna, and the Island.
